Victor Harold Breitenfeldt, age 92, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2013 in Richland,
Washington with his family by his side. He was born on April 25, 1921 in Wibaux, Montana to
Reinhardt and Olga (Juhnke) Breitenfeldt.
Victor grew up in Montana, the oldest of four siblings. He was a cowboy at heart who loved the
outdoors, hunting, fishing and camping. His family lived on a ranch for several years in Wibaux, then
they moved to Clyde Park and eventually Neihart, where his father operated a lumber business.
Victor began working there in his late teens and became his father's "right hand man". They felled
trees, hauled logs and cut them for lumber that was used in the mines.
During WWII, Vic served in the US Army for the 389th Quartermaster Trucking Company. He trained
in Fort Carson, Colorado and Fort Ord, California. His first assignment was to the Aleutian Islands
where it was rumored that an invasion was to take place by the Japanese. He also served in the
Philippines and New Guinea, driving a truck to provide supplies to the troops. Victor was honorably
discharged in 1945. He was a lifetime member of the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) and a member
of the American Legion, holding many offices throughout the years.
After the war, Victor joined his parents who had moved to Prosser, Washington while he was gone.
He must have liked what he saw when he got off the train and walked five miles into town because he
stayed there 65 years. He began working in construction with his father and later started his own
general contracting business. Victor was known as a skilled builder who built and remodeled many
homes and businesses in the Prosser area.
In 1953, Vic met Elizabeth (Betty) Sullivan at a dance in West Richland, Washington. He, no
doubt, impressed her with his great dancing skills. They were married on December 26 of the
same year at Christ the King Catholic Church in Richland. Vic and Betty raised four children:
Susan, Dan, Greg and Carol. They were very active in the Catholic Church where he was an
usher during masses for many years.
After retiring, Vic and Betty enjoyed traveling. They went on two cruises, a trip to Europe and
traveled many times to Florida to visit their daughter, Carol, and her family. They enjoyed gardening
and spending time with family during holidays and at their cabin on White Pass. Vic and Betty
moved to a senior living apartment in Richland in 2010.
Victor was a quiet, gentle man who loved his family dearly. He was preceded in death by his
mother, Olga, father, Reinhardt, brother, Bob, stepfather, Jerry Teeple and brother-in-law, Harold
Foraker. He is survived by his devoted and caring wife of 59 years, Betty, and their children, Susan
(Brian) Isaacs, Dan (Asha) Breitenfeldt, Greg (Debbie) Breitenfeldt and Carol (Henri) Groenen. He
had 8 grandchildren: Nicole, Jenny, Danielle, Alisa, Ryan, Shane, Lydia and Wyatt, and one great
grandchild, Victor. He is also survived by his sister, Vi Foraker, brother, Don (Bev) Breitenfeldt, and
sister-in-law, Kathy Breitenfeldt, numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to give a special thank you to Vic's caregivers, who lovingly took care of him
for the past three years. Thank you also to friends, Magdalena and Naik Naiknimbalkar and Father
Pedro Bautista Peraza for their friendship, guidance and support through this difficult time.
Recitation of the Rosary will be held on Thursday, June 20th at 6:00 pm at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in
Prosser. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 21st at 10:00 am at Sacred Heart Catholic
Church in Prosser. A graveside service with Full Military Honors will follow at the Prosser Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donating to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1905 Highland
Drive, Prosser, Washington 99350 or to the VFW, 1101 Wine Country Road, Prosser, Washington
